Community Event: Street-ball with Kenny McFadden

Elmarie Els —

Thursday, 14 March 2019, Titahi Bay School, 3:30pm to 6pm

Taeaomanino Trust has the privilege of coordinating ‘Whanau Fun Time Streetball’ with basketball legend, Kenny McFadden. In 2018, we took streetball to communities in Strathmore, Pomare-Taita, Wainui, Waitangirua (x 2), and Cannons Creek. Next month we are coming to Titahi Bay.

Kenny is an African American, originally from Detroit, Michigan. He is a former professional basketballer, and has made significant contribution to the wellbeing of hundreds of young people over a number of years. Kenny has used his talents to engaging with young people to embrace learning, education and opportunities. The message is simple – education must go hand in hand with gifts in sports or any field a person chooses. Steven Adams, NBA player with Oklahoma Thunders is Kenny’s most recent high profile achievement.

Streetball offers vulnerable parents an opportunity to broadening their support system within the wider community.  On Thursday, 14 March we will be using the courts at Kura Street School from 3:30pm to 6pm. Another contribution is supporting a pathway for parents to engage with Titahi Bay Intermediate and Mana College at this time of the year. We understand parents bypassing local intermediates and colleges to go outside.

Bunnings have been generous in providing two projects with a theme (pencil case, symbolising education, learning and arts), and (wooden piggy bank symbolising financial savings and management)..
