LEARNING AREA: LANGUAGES


TE REO MĀORI: NCEA LEVEL 1 

Course description:  In this course, you will learn to communicate using Te Reo Māori in a variety of  forms, to convey your thoughts accurately on a number of topics, and to use sentence patterns and vocabulary (up to level 6 of the curriculum). You will also continue to learn and develop your knowledge in tikanga Māori and participate in cultural practices to enhance your learning in Te Reo Māori. 

Possible pathways:  Te Reo Māori is a UE approved subject and could lead to a range of careers e.g.  Interpreter, Teacher, Policy Analyst, Diplomat, Researcher, Journalism.  

NCEA credits available: Students can gain a total of 20 Achievement Standard credits.  A Merit or Excellence endorsement is possible.  

Exclusions: None


TE REO MĀORI: NCEA LEVEL 2 

Course description:  This course extends written, spoken, listening and reading skills acquired from  NCEA Level 1 Te Reo Māori. It also aims to extend knowledge and understanding  of Te Āo Maori. You will continue to develop your knowledge in Te Reo Māori by participating and practising in a number of Te Āo Māori activities to enhance  your learning. The course covers topics such as Hui Māori, Hakinakina, Purakau and Nga Kaupapa Rangatahi. 

Possible pathways: Te Reo Māori is a UE approved subject and could lead to a  range of careers e.g. Interpreter, Teacher, Policy Analyst, Diplomat, Researcher,  Journalism. 

NCEA credits available: Students can gain a total of 28 Achievement Standard credits.  A Merit or Excellence endorsement as well as UE literacy  is possible. 

Exclusions: Students must complete NCEA Level 1 or be assessed by the Learning Area Head. 


TE REO MĀORI: NCEA LEVEL 3 

Course description:  In this course, students will develop proficient listening, reading, writing and speaking skills in Te Reo Māori . It also aims to extend a students understanding of Nga  Tikanga Māori (Māori culture) and Te Ao Māori (the Māori world). The course covers topics such as kawa, waiata tawhito me nga take Māori i roto i te ao hurihuri.  You will gain a deeper understanding and appreciation of tikanga and Te Reo  Māori. 

Possible pathways:  Te Reo Māori is a UE approved subject and could lead to a range of careers eg.  Interpreter, Teacher, Policy Analyst, Diplomat, Researcher, Journalism.  

NCEA credits available: Students can gain a total of 28 Achievement Standard credits.  A Merit or Excellence endorsement is possible. 

Exclusions: Students must complete NCEA Level 2 or be assessed by the Learning Area Head. 


GERMAN, LEVEL 1

Course description:  In this course, you will learn to communicate using Deutsch (German) in a variety of forms, to convey your thoughts accurately on a number of topics, and to use sentence patterns and vocabulary (up to level 5 and 6 of the curriculum). You will also continue to learn and develop your knowledge of language concepts and participate in cultural practices to enhance your learning around German culture.

Possible pathways:  (German is UE approved) 

Language is the key to everything, especially to understanding people. Whether you are going to be a lawyer, teacher, prime minister, diplomat or journalist – or any other profession that involves people, understanding different languages and therewith people, will be essential for your future profession.

NCEA credits available: Students can gain a total of 20 Achievement Standard credits. 

Exclusions: None

GERMAN, LEVEL 2

Course description:  Building on your Level 1 German course or already existing German skills, you will learn how to communicate using Deutsch (German) with confidence in a variety of forms, to convey your thoughts accurately on a number of topics, and to use sentence patterns and vocabulary (up to level 6 and 7 of the curriculum).  

Possible pathways:  (German is UE approved) 

Language is the key to everything, especially to understanding people. Whether you are going to be a lawyer, doctor, nurse, teacher, prime minister, diplomat or journalist - or any other profession that involves people, understanding different languages and therewith people, will be essential for future profession. 

 NCEA credits available: Students can gain a total of 24 Achievement Standard credits. 

 Exclusions: Must have completed level 1 or sufficient German skills.

ESOL: NCEA Level 1, 2 and 3 

Course description:  This course is for students where English is their second language. It is aimed at  helping students develop their English skills and supporting them with their other  subjects. Students will be interviewed. Assessments will reflect the student’s level. 

Possible pathways: ESOL helps develop reading, writing, speaking and listening  skills which will help students with their further study and career pathway.  

NCEA credits available: NCEA credits available up to 20 Unit Standard credits at different  levels (depends on the student). 

Exclusions: For ESOL students only
