NCEA Level 2 Adventure Education class a hit with the students!

Mana Media —

Maximising engagement of students with their learning is key to educational achievement. Secondary schools regularly review subjects they offer students, looking to run new courses if there is a sufficient level of interest and a suitably qualified teacher to run it.

This year at Manawatu College we have introduced NCEA Level 2 Adventure Education. The aim of the course is to provide seniors with practical skills to participate safely in a variety of outdoor environments, and facing challenging experiences that develop self-confidence and life skills.

The main topics are:

  • kayaking

  • tramping

  • navigation

  • rock climbing

  • adventure-based learning

The response to the offer of this new course has been overwhelming, with two classes now running. Students are really enjoying it, thanks in part to the dedication, enthusiasm and skill of Mr Danny Dyer, who joined our teaching staff last year.

Such has been the level of interest amongst all our students, Adventure Education is now an optional component in our junior physical education programme, and a level 3 Adventure Education course will be offered for 2020.
