Opunake Sports Exchange 2017

The much anticipated annual event took place on Wednesday May 31st - Thursday 1st May at home this year.

Opunake High School students, staff and supporters arrived at School at 12pm on Wednesday.  The Exchange began with an impressive Powhiri before the competition began.  

First up was the Girls Volleyball game at 12:45.  The Girls made a great start to the Competition for Manawatu, beating Opunake 2 sets to 1.

The Debate was next up.  Moot - That the youth of New Zealand is becoming increasingly violent. Opunake High School (affirmative) vs Manawatu College (Negative).  Manawatu College won with 299/400 points to 281/400.  Best speaker went to Dylan Coleman from Opunake who scored 83 points out 100. Natalie MacDonald was awarded second best speaker with 72/100. Emma Tufuga and Maddi Parlato each got third equal with 69/100!

The First XV went down 47-0.

The Mixed Hockey team played at Halliwell Turf in Levin.  They lost 3-1.

The Girls Soccer team went down 10-1.

The Girls Basketball narrowly lost 56-41.

 That was the end of the first day.  Our Opunake visitors had dinner at the College and there was a Social held in the Hall for the two schools to socalise off the field with each other.  The party stayed overnight at Matau Marae in Levin. 

Thursday June 1st was The Senior A Netball game, the Boys Soccer match and the Boys Basketball game, all at 9.30am before our visitors left for home.

Results from Day 2:

-The Senior A Netball went down to Opunake 24-38.

-The Boys Basketball team lost 70-22.

-The Boys Soccer team lost 6-0.

Following the mornings sport was a farewell feast before our visitors set off home. 

The refs of each game nominated a Player of the Day award and these went to:

- First XV: Isaac Laracy

-Girls Volleyball: Hinewai Kunaiti

-Boys Soccer: Fergus Cockburn

-Girls Soccer: Pachience Fenn

-Hockey - Qynn Smith

-Boys Basketball: Quinten Carr

-Girls Basketball: Tania Albert

-Senior A Netball: Saryah Chambers
