Leadership Camp 2018

Mana Media —

The Leadership Camp was run on Monday to Wednesday of the first week of school. It was moved to the beginning of the year to assist the new leaders in being prepared for the year and more importantly be ready for the Year 9 camp.

The leaders attended the first day of school and then were gathered together after last period to head out to the Foxton Beach Bible Camp.

Through a series of games, activities and discussions the Senior Leadership Team of elected students, House Leaders and selected others were forced to bond and work together to create a cohesive team who could be role models and effective as individuals and as a group.

Over the first few hours the students were separated into groups and asked to come up with and teach a game that forced the others to learn more about themselves and others in the group. During the teaching the students were evaluated on their communication skills and contribution to the learning experience for everyone.

Once those activities were completed they had a meal that was created by  camp chef Mr O’Sullivan and shortly after the leaders were swept into a discussion about what their roles are within the school and the expectations of them as leaders.

The next day they rushed to school before the juniors arrived for their first day to meet and greet new students and help them find their way around. They zipped back to camp for a discussion about communication and management of groups, with a brief lunch and headed back to school for the first session of peer support where they took small groups of juniors for activities.

After school the seniors were joined by the junior leaders at camp. The juniors got to spend time discussing leadership and expectations while the seniors had a debrief on their first teaching session.

All of the leaders were asked to meet in the dining room after the discussion and they were split into small teams and given random pieces of equipment and asked to design an activity that used all to the equipment. Each group then taught the game and the rest of the leaders were guinea pigs for them to test the games out.

After a long afternoon and night students were herded to bed for the early start and the powhiri on Wednesday. This was the final day of the Leadership Camp and the start of the real test for what they had learned, Year 9 camp.
