Relay for Life 2017

Mana Media —

Congratulations to our staff and students who participated in the annual Relay For Life event in Palmerston North.

Relay For Life is an inspirational and super fun event, during which participants celebrate with survivors, remember loved ones lost to cancer and come together as a community to fight back against cancer.

This year Relay For Life took place over the weekend of March 11th and 12th at the Massey University, Hokowhitu Campus. Each Relay begins with cancer survivors and caregivers leading the first lap of the event. All team members follow on behind survivors and carers for the first lap. When they’re not on the track, participants enjoy on-site activities and entertainment.

At dusk, a Candlelight Ceremony was held to remember loved ones who have been affected by cancer. Team members continued to walk/jog, symbolising the fact that cancer never sleeps. This year saw heavy rain, which meant that the track was shut down from 12am-6am or walking but everyone was up and on the go early on Sunday to make up for lost time.

The closing ceremony for the event takes place at 12pm on the Sunday.  This is the time for teams to celebrate accomplishments and acknowledge the community’s support and commitment.

Our staff and students had, "an amazing time even though the weather hasn't been fantastic.  It's an amazing group here this year who are eager and willing to jump in to do as many laps as possible."

Despite the weather the team thoroughly enjoyed the event and raised a lot of money for the Cancer Society. Head Boy Callum Thwaites raised $553 - the most that an individual has ever raised for Manawatu College!

 Well done, team!
