Miniah Summerell, Shelby Wells and Sam Hansen compete in the New Zealand National Weightlifting Championships in Auckland

Mana Media —

All three girls qualified for Nationals by hitting D grade weights in competition for their respective weight divisions.

This is a massive achievement for Shelby and Miniah as they only started competing this year and only entered their first competition in March!

Shelby was first up on Friday 21st September.  She lifted a  competition best 50kg snatch, a personal best clean and jerk 68kg, and personal best total of 118kg.  Shelby also broke the New Zealand under 15 record she broke at secondary schools with her clean and jerk.  She hit 5 out of 6 lifts and finished fouth junior (age 15 to 20). What an absolute accomplishment Shelby!

On Saturday 22 September Sam snatched 74kg, a competition best clean and jerk at 97kg, and total best equalling 171kg for a bronze medal in the junior U69kg division.   Well done, Sam!

On Sunday 23rd Miniah competed and nailed three from three snatches with a personal best lift of 67kg.  She also had a personal best clean and jerk @ 78kg (even after missing hr second lift), a personal best total @ 145kg. Most importantly Miniah is New Zealand Junior Champion in the Females 90+kg division!  Congratulations, Miniah.

Well done to all three girls and their coach, Mr Shayne Nation.
