Te wiki o Te Reo Māori

Mana Media —

In September, we celebrated Maori language week.

This year is special in particular because it is 50 years since Nga tamatoa stood up and started the petition to make Maori language one of our official languages.

Every wiki o te reo, our school, along with Horowhenua and Waiopehu come together for a tri-school tournament. This year we played Mana Ariki. This was amazing. Next year we are hosting this tournament and we will be playing Horo Hopu.

Other activities we are doing to celebrate te Wiki is a mahi tae comp, which is colouring in your best masterpiece and we are also doing a quiz.

Mrs Belk's English class took part in the te wā tuku Reo Māori (Māori Language Moment). The class celebrated te Reo Māori by playing Tākaro, a fun kupu Māori game. Tau kē rangatahi ma!

People across Aotearoa were taking part by using te Reo Māori all at the same time. Last year there were over a million people participating, showing their support for Te Reo. This year we were part of that moment!

Ka mau te wehi!

As part of our Wiki o Te Reo Māori celebrations, we had a staff potluck morning tea to celebrate how far Te Reo Māori has come, in the last 34 years especially!! We also acknowledged those who, over the past 50 years fought for Te Reo Māori to have a place for the students we find in front of us. Kia kaha te reo!
