Year 10 Leadership Camp

Massie Harvey —

Leadership ~ Encouragement ~ Teamwork ~ Honesty ~ Loyalty ~ Self Control

During the two days of our Year 10 Leadership Camp, the six attributes above played a key role in each of the activities we participated in. When we arrived our first job was to get set up in our cabins. This was completed quickly and then we were put into two different groups to do two different activities:

Activity 1:

In this activity, we had to find six cards which had each of the attributes listed on them. As a group we talked about them and put them in order from the best to the lowest. Once we finished that part of the activity, we did an exercise which helped us get to know other people in the group that we didn't know as well as others; finding out things like who sings in the shower or can speak more than one language.

Activity 2:

This activity was a physical challenge which involved completing a confidence course that had both easy and hard obstacles. This activity gave me a good opportunity to develop my ability to encourage others because, once I had finished the course, I was able to support and encourage others that were still on the course.

After lunch we were able to do more fun activities, such as the water slide (which was really fast). I went first and everyone else got to see how much it hurt when you hit the water! Other activities included the Flying Fox, swimming in the pool and having some free time before dinner. Once dinner was finished, we did some “Car Karaoke”; this is where a group of you get into a car and lip sync or sing along to a particular song. A brilliant performance from Connor, Kelsyn and myself led to us winning that event. After the car karaoke was over we had just enough time left to play some spotlight.

DAY TWO

The next day we worked in groups to make a game aimed at Years 5 and 6 students, which helped us improve our teamwork and confidence. My group came up with ‘Giants, Wizards and Dwarfs’. In our game, Giants are stronger than Dwarfs, Dwarfs are stronger than Wizards, and Wizards are stronger than Giants. During the game, if I am a Giant and I tag a Dwarf, they have to go back to the starting point and stay there. If I get tagged by a Wizard, then I have to go back to the starting point and stay there. Once we had finished working on our games we got to share our ideas with the rest of the groups. This was the final activity we did before heading back home.

Overall, the camp was an awesome experience and I didn’t realise how much I was learning until we talked about the activities afterwards. I feel like I am much better at encouraging others now and I am really keen to keep developing my leadership skills in the future. It was also a great opportunity to get to know other people that I don’t normally spend time with. If you have the chance to go on a camp, you HAVE to do it!
