On Friday 13 May, our Inter-House Cross Country competition was held on our new course, west of the College field and south-west of the Foxpine Airstrip, on land owned by Mrs. Denise Baily, Mr. Euan Crighton, Mr. Gary Hayes and the Horowhenua District Council.
The 3.8km (all girls’ grades and the junior boys) and 4.8km (intermediate and senior boys) long courses are totally off-road, traversing several sand-hills covered in pine forest, with many flat stretches through scrub and cut-over pine.
Our special thanks go out to:
- Mr. Kevin Gunther for pointing us in the right direction and helping to make the new course happen for us;
- Mr. Robbie Puklowski, our caretaker and his team, including Mr. Brian Thomas, for creating the course;
- Miss Kylie Kauri (Sports Coordinator) and Ms. Toni Hakaraia (Director of Sport) for all of the extra work the new course created in running the event;
- The landowners (mentioned above) for allowing us to use their land and being so helpful.
The new course was used for the Manawatu Inter-Secondary Cross Country Championships on Wednesday this week, where the top cross country runners from 15 secondary schools in the region competed. This year will be the 61st time Manawatu College has hosted the Inter-Secondary Cross Country.
