The Horowhenua District Council hosted it’s annual Civic Honours Awards in December which includes the presentation of Youth Excellence Scholarships. 

In keeping with tradition, the new senior student leaders were announced and presented with their badges at our recent Senior Prizegiving ceremony. Each applicant completed a fairly rigorous process involving a written application, an interview, talking to the school about their application, and having students and staff express their preferences for each position and it gives us great pleasure to present our 2017 Senior Student Leadership Team.

Week 7 of term four saw the senior students go on exam leave, leaving just the year 9 and 10 students at school. This year it was decided that we would be reviving ‘Activities Week’ for the juniors and what a week it was!

The Spirit of Adventure trophy challenge puts four schools from around the country against each other in a number of different events that earn your team points.

This competition was taken out by Field House this year with 16.7 points.  

In September 9 FH attended the annual Amazing Race Mathematics trip in Wellington.

Allen and Morris Houses took out a tied first place in this competition.

2016 has been a very busy but productive year.  First and foremost, congratulations to all of our students for your hard work and positive attitude. 

This year has been a good one for Allen House and we have had some big changes.

After eight spectacular years in Morris House, in 2016 I had the pleasure of taking on the role of Dean. 

The 2016 netball season has been one of the best yet. We started off the year with the selection of the team. This year the team was filled with a variety of age and experience and made for an exciting year.

It has been an absolute honor to be the captains of Field House 2016.

Having the privilege of playing in the Manawatu College First XV from 2000 - 2002, it came as an honour to be asked to coach the team this year

The Year 10 Market Day is a preparation task for the Level 1 Market Day course. In that course, students will be required to write a business plan, conduct the business activity, then review and evaluate their performance. The business activity will be similar to a market day and students can earn 6 L1 NCEA credits if they complete it successfully.

Year 12 student, Logan Dear was graded a Karate Black Belt at a recent training and grading weekend in Turangi.

In July, Sam Hansen entered into the final competition of the Teen Gauntlet series, the Teen Gauntlet Gathering.

Congratulations to the following students who passed NCEA last year with an overall merit or excellence endorsement.

Quinten Mochan completed the Junior Non-Commissioned Officers Course with the New Zealand Cadet Forces held at the Ohakea RNZAF Base in July of this year.

A large group of Year 10 students and supporting staff members returned from a tiring but satisfying week in the Central North Island.

The Duke of Edinburgh’s Hillary Award scheme challenges young people aged 14 to 25 throughout the world to serve others, acquire new skills, experience adventure and make new friends. 

Xsavier and Temyia Taiaroa have returned from Hawaii, exceeding their own goals and expectations with the successes of their respective teams.

The tournament began with a bang, with Manawatu College beating Horowhenua College 34–0.

On the back of her successful introduction to weightlifting, Year 12 student, Samantha Hansen, has been selected into the New Zealand 2016 Youth World Championships and the 2016 Youth Commonwealth Championships team. 

On the 18th August a group of 51 visitors from Narita City, Japan, was officially welcomed to Manawatu College with a full school Powhiri. 

This year, 65 students, 5 staff, 2 coaches (Mr, Mark Enoka, Soccer, and Mr. Jarrod MacDonald, Basketball and Volleyball) travelled to Opunake to compete in our annual sports exchange

"Being a part of the Duke of Edinburgh Hillary’s Award (DoE) since year ten has truly helped me develop as a leader within the school and my community." 

Animation College NZ recently ran its annual nationwide “Light & Dark Character” competition.

The One Big Mosh is a small event with a lot of heart, an event that helps young musicians in the Horowhenua area perform in front of each other, getting used to performing on stage in a safe, constructive environment. 

This year has been a busy one, setting up placements, having interviews and starting work in a range of occupations in our local area.

Last year one of our teachers, Matua Glenn Mitchell, spent one lunchtime each week with a small group of boys who were interested in learning how to carve traditional Maori designs in wood. 

Congratulations to Xsavier and Temyia Taiaroa for being selected to represent NZ in the U14 and U18 Junior Womens Inline Hockey teams which will be competing in the Junior Olympics in Hawaii next month. 

All five parent-representative nominees for the Manawatu College Board of Trustees were elected unopposed in June.  

So far this year we have had equestrian team representation at the Nga Tawa (Marton) and St Matthew’s (Masterton) interschool competitions.

As part of the level one Biology course there was a field trip to the dune system at Foxton Beach. 

Towards the end of term one, the class of 2012 was whisked away to Forest Lakes Camp for their Year 13 Day. 

Monday April 18th 0900hrs: while most students are enjoying their first sleep in of the Autumn holidays, three Manawatu College students — Alice Astwood (Year 12), Bailey Hamlin (Year 12) and Carla Whittaker (Year 13) — make their way to the Ohakea Air Force Base to begin their week-long Defence Careers Experience (DCE). 

Nga Wai o Manawhenua had their first noho for the year at the beginning of the term one holidays out at Matau Marae. 

At the annual Great Forest Run, held on April 9th at the Waiterere Forest, Armand van Loggerenberg and Liam Meeghan both completed the half marathon, in 1h55m and 2h05m respectively. Well done, boys! 

Jonny Shannon from ATTITUDE came and gave a series of informative, educational, inspiring and entertaining talks to each of the student year groups. Feedback from our students on the sessions was exceptionally positive.

Our nine senior student leaders spent a day at the GRIP Leadership Conference in Wellington towards the end of term one, developing their role as student leaders.

It is our privilege and pleasure to recognise and congratulate the students listed below for their incredible performances on the track and in the field . 

Chelsea Parlato  was the sole Manawatu College representative at the Manawatu Inter-Secondary Swimming Sports earlier this year and she performed exceptionally well. 

Students who have registered to play rugby for the College in 2016 were given the privilege of getting up close and personal with the William Webb-Ellis Trophy when it visited us this year.

COLLEGE RELAY FOR LIFE TEAMS RAISE OVER $2,000 THIS YEAR.

Anei te mihi mahana kia koutou I tenei wa. What a year we have had with our Māori students.

Making the transition into College life can be daunting for some and so one of the first events on the calendar is the year 9 overnight noho.

2016 saw the traditional field trip to Rotorua for the level 3 Geography class.

Congratulations to our Senior A Netball Team, coach Whaea Ada Graham and manager Ms. Pip Park on their sixth (out of 28 teams) placing in the Lower North Island Netball tournament in Whanganui.

Nga Uri O Waru — (the fellowship of eight) are a band consisting of 8 students from years 10–12 at Manawatu College.

Students and parents from our contributing primary schools attended our Open Evening on Thursday 4th August.

On Saturday 25 June, Year 12 student, Samantha Hansen (who prefers to be called Sam) entered into her first ever weightlifting competition.

This year a mixed group of 32 students took up the challenge to attempt, for the first time from Manawatu College, The Big Australian Science Competition.

Term 3 saw the 2016 Production Studies course put on their school production, “What’s On?”

In June and July the College had three-yearly reviews from the Education Review Office and NZQA, and last week we received the confirmed reports.

The College proudly recognises the academic accomplishments of the students listed below.  

On Wednesday, May 17th, a group of year 12 students, Ms Tucker, Mr Napier, Kyle and myself travelled down to Wellington to attend the National Young Leaders Day (NYLD). 

On Friday 13 May, our Inter-House Cross Country competition was held on our new course, west of the College field and south-west of the Foxpine Airstrip, on land owned by Mrs. Denise Baily, Mr. Euan Crighton, Mr. Gary Hayes and the Horowhenua District Council.

Manawatu College fielded a team of five athletes for this year’s Manawatu Inter-Secondary Schools Athletic Championships. 

At the beginning of March, Manawatu College Educational Trust Chairperson, Mr. John Maher, presented the student representative on the Educational Trust, David Cleary, with a cheque for $3,000  to be used to purchase specialised weightlifting equipment.

The start of the school year began with a full school Powhiri to welcome the new year 9 students as well as any new students to Manawatu College. 

In February, the head students and principals of the three colleges in the Horowhenua were invited to meet the Right Honourable John Key, and then have lunch with him and hear him share his thoughts on our region, New Zealand and the United States of America election primaries.
