9FH have been learning about politics and the current New Zealand system of government in their Homeroom with Miss Frith over the last 6 weeks.
The students had an assignment to establish political parties, come up with policies and campaign with posters and pamphlets and a presentation to 10AL, who voted for the winner, the Prime Minister of 9FH.
The winning party was 'United Whanau', consisting of Rose Lake and Katie Byron. They gained one third of the votes cast by 10AL. This, however was not enough votes for the party to be able to govern alone. This meant that they had to go into negotiations with the other parties to put a final party together.
They formed a coalition with the 'Anti Violence' Party, consisting of Shane Rapson and Fergus Cockburn and 'The Environmentalists', Jamie Henry and Jack Bodell-Dolman, to form the 9FH government who make 9FH decisions.
Katie Byron was voted the best speaker on the day and was voted in as the Prime Minister of 9FH.
It was an authentic learning experience for the students and a great example of students being able to make links with their learning outside of the classroom.
