Staff and Students Impressed on Te Awahou Nieuwe Stroom Tour

This will be a destination where people can experience cultural tourism that is both authentic and interactive.

This cultural precinct preserves, shares and makes accessible the stories and taonga of specific cultural groups: tangata whenua, early pioneers, Dutch and more recent immigrants.

The project has attracted widespread recognition at a national level and is the only project of its kind in New Zealand. It will transform Foxton into the tourism and events destination of the region.

Te Awahou Nieuwe Stroom is being developed as a partnership. When opened, Te Awahou Niewe Stroom will reflect the aspirations, foresight and hard work of many volunteers over more than ten years.  Te Awahou Nieuwe Stroom will be the home to:

• Piriharakeke Generation Inspiration Centre, a Maori Museum and Gallery representing stories of Ngati Raukawa ki te Tonga. It will encompass a high quality gallery that will be the pataka of Ngati Raukawa taonga and this will be supported by Te Taitoa Maori o Te Awahou Trust
• Oranjehof, New Zealand’s National Dutch Museum that will inform, educate and inspire New Zealand about its Dutch connections. This is being developed and supported by the Dutch Connection Trust
• Foxton Community Hub is the living room for the Foxton community. The Community Hub will house:
  • The Foxton library
  • The Foxton Visitor Service Centre
  • A youth space
  • The $7 million complex will be built on the site of the current 17th century replica Dutch windmill - De Molen - in the old Mitre 10 building between Main Street and the river loop.
