Library makeover
The library makeover has been on full steam this term.
Last term we turned the fiction section to be front facing. This term, the student librarians have been busy adding alphabet stickers on all the books in the top right hand corner. This was a huge job and it was amazing to have so many enthusiastic volunteers.
In the middle of the term, under the guidance of Cathy Kennedy, the National Library advisor, we turned the non-fiction section to be front facing. We also ditched the dewey decimal system and put the non-fiction books into categories to make it easy to find what you want . For example, if you are looking for dinosaurs, you look for the section with the dinosaur icon. Having a visual image makes it easier to find books you want regardless of your age. The other upside of picture icons is that it's really easy to put books back in the right place.
This majority of mahi/work took place over one day with the amazing help from Hayley Steele, Nicky Anderson, Hamish Cobb, Louise Grebel. Hayley and Nicky continued over the next week to sticker the rest of the non-fiction books. There has been a huge interest in borrowing non-fiction books and we are really grateful for all the work everyone did. Thank you!
Thanks to the fabulous donation of paint on the FOMS Kindo fundraising, Clive has started painting the graphic novel room. It looks amazing and will hopefully be ready for use early next term. Thanks to Carley Lloyd for the colour recommendation. Next step, shelving for the room!
We have also set up a QR code so anyone in the school can search the library database. You can see what books we have and whether it's available. There is a poster on the library window that parents can use. It only works on-site at school.
As we have tidied up the library we have some things we no longer need. We have donated these to our local Māpua library. It's feels really good to be able to give something back to the community too!
Finally we are super excited about ordering all our new books that the money from the book fair raised. We anticipate we will have around 70 new books in our library! Miharo/Amazing!
