JOB DESCRIPTION - Caretaker Māpua School

Caretaker (Grade One)

RESPONSIBLE TO:

Principal and any delegated management staff

RELATIONSHIPS WITH:

The Principal, Staff, Pupils, and Board of Trustees Property Manager

General Caretaking and Maintenance of School Grounds

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS/EXPERIENCE

  1. Previous experience in a maintenance or caretaking role

  2. Familiarity with basic repair and maintenance tools and equipment

  3. First Aid certificate 

  4. NZS 5826:2010 'Pool water quality'


KEY TASKS 

RESPONSIBLE FOR:

  1. Knowing the school as fully as possible, in every way: grounds, buildings, furniture and fittings.

  2. The care, development and maintenance of the school grounds. Ensure the school is always presented to a very high standard.

  3. Keeping records, which allow tracking of budgets, stock inventories, seasonal jobs, timetable, water consumption and maintenance.

  4. The day to day testing of the swimming pool, some cleaning and oversight of the filtration system, clean changing rooms daily during the swimming season.

  5. Ensuring cleanliness and maintenance of the school sheds and surrounds, including caretaker’s sheds, swimming pool sheds etc.

  6. The cleaning and sanitation of the outside of school buildings and the cloak bays.

  7. General classroom and site maintenance as required.

  8. Holding keys of buildings and the oversight of onsite access and alarm services.

  9. Monitoring and ordering cleaning materials and consumables as required

  10. Liaising with cleaning staff to ensure appropriate standards are met and materials available as required. 

  11. Principal requested tasks.



KEY TASKS


ORGANISATIONAL ROUTINES

  • Be considerate of classroom programmes in respect to noise levels.

  • Maintain high safety standards that protect yourself and others from harm. Jobs that contain an element of danger to others should be carried out at times that remove this risk.

  • Be considerate of others and maintain open, honest lines of communication.

  • Ensure Principal is aware of issues of significance.

  • Plan and operate a maintenance program that ensures quality upkeep of ground, buildings, furniture, fittings and any machinery.

  • Ensure appropriate safety precautions/clothing are used when needed. 


GROUNDS: General

  • Maintain grounds, including trees, shrubs, gardens; trimming, shaping and replacing as directed.

  • Attend regularly to clearing of stormwater drains, traps, and spoutings.

  • Wash down concrete paths.

  • Clean paths and porches with leaf vacuum - daily if needed.

  • Attend to minor repairs such as window catches, door locks, classroom furniture, leaking taps, replacement of light bulbs etc.

  • Arrange appropriate tradesmen as required - approval for this via Principal.

  • Mark out sports fields and hard courts as needed and help with set up of sports days and other school and FOMS based events.

  • Erect and/or remove goal posts as required.

  • Spraying for weeds as required along edges, and around trees etc.

  • Disposal of rubbish as required.

  • Heat pumps to be checked and filters cleaned on a termly basis as per manufacturer guidelines. 

  • Paint small areas internally/externally around the school as required

GROUNDS: weekly

  • Clean drinking fountains

  • General maintenance and development


HOLIDAY DUTIES

  • Clean outside windows

  • Wash exterior of buildings (1 chemical wash annually in accordance with manufacturers specifications)

  • Clean cloak bay areas

  • Other duties as required by Principal


HEALTH AND SAFETY:

  • Carry out daily safety checks at the beginning of each month

  • In consultation with the Principal arrange for maintenance or compliance work to be carried out.

  • On request of the Principal, come to school when urgent work is required e.g. secure a window, flood at school or graffiti needs cleaning up before school starts.


BUILDING WARRANT OF FITNESS (daily)

  • Daily follow the relevant procedures and record keeping laid out in the Building Warrant Compliance Manual. This manual is to be kept in the school office at all times.

  • Monitor ETap for hazard notifications Report immediately to the school Principal any school property or building hazards that could cause injury. Ensure these hazards are isolated until remedial work is carried out.

  • Report any property or building fault to the Principal 


ELECTRICAL TESTING

  • Ensure testing of leads and machinery is carried out once a year

SWIMMING POOL

  • Get the pool ready for the start of swimming season.

  • During summer, check regularly for chlorination and general water conditioning.

  • Keep accurate records.

  • Clean and sluice surrounds as required.

  • Vacuum and backwash as and when necessary 

  • Check the heating system regularly.

  • Clean changing rooms daily

Pay rate and Allowances: 

As per  School Caretakers , Cleaners, Canteen and Ground Staff Collective Agreement

Hours:

4.5 hours per day - Monday to Friday

7:30am - 12:00pm (22.5 hours per week)
52 weeks per year 

(4 weeks annual leave taken when school is officially closed)

Sick Leave:

10 days / annum

Performance Reviews will be on an annual basis (November). Rate of pay will be negotiated as part of the performance management cycle.
