Mapua boys achieve football success

Neil Chalmers —

The 2018 Christchurch International Cup is well on its way to becoming the premier junior and youth football event in Australasia

Between July 8 and 15 Christchurch welcomed over one thousand 8 to 14-year-old players and their supporters from around New Zealand and the Asia-Pacific region. The state-of-the-art facility of the Christchurch Football Centre created the perfect backdrop for teams to test themselves against some of the best players in their age-groups. They competed for fantastic trophies and the Christchurch International Cup title. Two Mapua School pupils, Otto Cox and Olly Johnson, were selected for the Nelson Suburbs FC 11th Grade team, one of two that travelled south for this tournament.

The tournament was brilliant. The players had an amazing time and performed very well. They played six games over three days and battled some really tough conditions.  Results didn't go their way at the beginning so it was a huge buzz on the last day when they won both their games and finished the competition on a massive high - two losses, two draws, and two wins.  Their coaches were very proud of them all and believe that they were a credit to the Tasman region.

Well done Olly and Otto and congratulations on also being selected for the 11th grade Nelson Bays Football Representative squad.

We would love to  also hear from other sportspeople who have had success in their field so we can share your news with the school community.
