Ride Safe, Ride On!

Anna Brewer —

Over the last few weeks, we have been lucky to have the incredible team from Ride On, Sports Tasman working with the Y5-8s.

All students in Y5-8 undertook a grade 1 session where they learnt basic bike skills; stopping, shoulder checking, signalling and how to check / look after your bike.

Following this, our Y6-8 students have all had a day out on local roads, taking on the grade 2 sessions.

Some Y6's tell us what they got up to:

We went down through Māpua village. We learnt how to turn and signal at intersections. We also learnt about roundabouts, passing park cars and driveways. We talked about getting on and off our bikes safely using the "4 Ls": leavers, lean, look, leg over.  There were lots of great tips like "pedal ready" so you're ready to start again once you have stopped.

It was fun getting to use all the skills we learnt during the day on the bike ride at the end - Christopher Y6

Some of the stuff like roundabouts was useful because you use it when you get your drivers licence - Hannah Y6

A huge thank-you to Anita and the Ride on Team!
