Hikoi!

Zac Deacon —

In week 6 Māpua School embarked on a whole school journey to Grossi Point to learn about the history of Māpua.

Our unit this term has been 'My Journey/Our Journey' using the new NZ Histories curriculum as a framework the students have explored their own and others journeys. The Hikoi (walk with a purpose) allowed localised links and context within our own environment for the students and staff.

Each team made their own way through the village, stopping at sites of historical interest along the way. The students were encouraged to stop, think and question what the land/buildings and area was used for in the past.

Students learnt about the history of Aranui Park, the chemical works, the wharf, the fire station, Pre-European use of the land, how Māori developed and created Pā and kumera gardens.

At Grossi Point, students were treated to a sausage sizzle and ice cream, thanks to the Māpua 4Square and the Motueka Creamery. After that some students 'discovered' some pakohe (argillite) tools and stones used by Māori settlers in the area.

There is a rich history to be discovered in our back yard and the students have learnt that it is important to know where we are all from.
