We Made a Hangi for Matariki!
Mapua School came together with parents and the wider community to create a hangi to feed more than 300 people.
The Middle Syndicate made stuffing for the hangi. We had some parents who gave up their time and brought along their whizzer machines to help with munching up the onions and apple. We had to rub the butter into the bread and then we put it all together and made balls for the hangi pack.
The girls from Kapahaka helped make the parcels to go into the hangi. We worked in a production line and every now and then we broke into song and sang waiata. It was a very special moment.
The Senior and Intermediate kapahaka boys were responsible for laying down the hangi (with support from some Dads). It was a very hot job as the irons were laid down and some men got a little burnt on their faces! The boys had to make sure that the food was covered well with soil, sack, and sheets so that no heat escaped.
The Middle Syndicate would like to thank all the parents who helped in any way towards the production of the hangi. It was a big learning curve for us all. We have yet to master this process, but we made huge steps towards doing this for another Matariki year.
Thank you also to Sally and Kelvin for loaning us a wonderful piece of land to cook our food in.
Thank you to Koro and Amanda for helping us and for teaching us the steps and resources needed to lay down a hangi.
Ngā mihi nui
