Thanks Intermediate Team For Giving Us Your Left Over Clay.
How exciting to be gifted some clay. We decided to make waka like Matua Hautere would have used.
Making the solid lump of clay into a waka was a serious challenge but Harakeke Tamariki are never ones to shy away from a wero! We banged our clay to get rid of air bubbles then shaped the inside of the hull. We had to use a combination of pressing and pinching to do this. Once our waka were dry we began investigating the best way to colour them. In the end we used different coloured dye. The final touch was to add detail using Indian ink and a cotton bud. We were delighted with how they turned out and were proud of the very long process we went through to make them. The only trouble with them is that they are super fragile!
