Amazing Art Works on Display at Matariki Celebration

Sarah Trolle —

The senior team worked hard during the term to produce a high standard of art work to put on display for our Matariki Celebration this year.

The senior team have worked hard during term 2 to produce amazing art works to display at the Mapua Community Hall for our school Matariki celebration.

We began the term looking at Robin Slow's art work and used it as motivation to produce chalk pastel pictures on black paper.  Robin visited us early in the term and gave us the idea to use our bird pictures to create Manu Tukutuku (kites).

We used recycled materials (bamboo, newspaper, shells, feathers) to produce our decorative kites.  Harakeke was used to bind the bamboo and to tie on our taonga.

Maire and Rimu class also created tissue paper lanterns to light up our Matariki evening.  We used balloons to create the shape and incorporated autumn leaves amongst the tissue layers.

The week of our celebration, the middle team buddied up with us and the children worked together to create glow stones (on stones collected from Mapua and Kina beaches) and recycled noodle box lanterns for each family.

We have had a fun-filled, arty term and the students have created many works they are proud of.
