Totaranui Camp - Year 7

Simon Clearwater —

34 Intrepid Year 7's took off for a wild week in the glorious Abel Tasman National Park.

By Frankie Palmer

It all started off with 34 excited students waiting at school with all their luggage. At Kaiteriteri we got onto the Abel Tasman Sea Shuttle and took the boat up right up to Totaranui! We then heaved our heavy luggage up The Avenue and up onto the front porch of the Ngarata Homestead. After fighting over who was going to sleep where we had a bit of chill out time and we played some games of tackle bullrush out in the front garden. That evening we eagerly ran up to the dining room, (which was separate to the main house) then we had chicken drumsticks and vegetables for dinner!

The next day we did our first round of rotations, my group was doing the Digital Scavenger Hunt then SUP (stand up paddleboarding). It was awesome and thank you so much for everyone who brought a paddleboard.

The day after it was our walk to Separation Point. The walk was really tiring on the way there,  then we stopped for lunch at Mutton Cove. When we got to Separation Point we saw some fake Gannets and a speaker making Gannet noises because DOC are trying to reintroduce Gannets to the area. We also saw some NZ fur seals.

On Thursday we finished our rotations. Our group were doing kayaking and eels. In kayaking we paddled around for a bit then we practiced rolling in the kayak, it was really exciting! For the eels we went with Anna to a creek by The Avenue. The eels were massive!

On the last day we packed up and headed down to the beach, played a few games and got back on the boat to Kaiteriteri. Thanks so much to everyone who made this camp so awesome and I’m sure that that everyone loved it!
