5, 4, 3, 2, 1...Blast off!

Bridget Dryden —

Last week during Discovery, some of our Junior Team children were lucky enough to make rockets with Clive.

Firstly they had to build their own rocket out of paper.  This included adding a nose cone to reduce resistance, deciding if they should include some blue tak to make it heavier and customising the fins on the rocket.  Putting the final touches on the rockets was a lesson in patience as the masking tape wasn't always co-operative!

There was a lot of shouting and excitement as we waited for the pressure in the compressor to reach the right level....it was a balancing act, as they discovered that more pressure wasn't always better!  Those who chose to use higher pressure found that this   highlighted some design flaws,  with some of the rockets blowing apart on their maiden voyage while others survived 3 voyages.  We finished off by firing them along the ground to see how far they could travel.

Thanks to Clive for coming along and sharing his expertise with us...next stop NASA!
