Clued Up Kids safety programme
On 31st October the Senior Learning Team had a book-less morning but it was definitely not work free!
All the Year 5 and 6 students had to work through different safety situations involving a variety of fun, interesting and informative safety activities.
Everyone was in a group and got involved in 8 stations, each with a different memorable safety message.
Fire safety messages - yell Fire! Fire! Fire! Get down, get low and get out - fast! Meet at the safe place.
Earthquake safety messages - be prepared, every person needs to have 3L of water (1 to drink, 1 to cook and 1 to clean). Drop! Cover! Hold! If you hear the Sting, it is a warning signal and there will be further notices/information.
Dog safety messages - approach dogs with the dog hand shake (closed fist with thumbs tucked inside). Chin and chest strokes are the best. If a dog is on its own, leave it alone.
Truck safety messages - if you can’t see the driver, the driver can’t see you. Be aware of the slip stream - be prepared.
Home safety messages - keep poisons and matches out of reach of young children, clean up your mess on the floor so there are no tripping hazards. If you find a lighter, match or chemicals give them to an adult. If you are not sure about something on the floor or a danger that you have noticed, tell an adult. Remember the heater metre rule.
Cycle safety - Helmets first! The ABC check before riding = Air, Brakes, Chain. L.S.M. - Look, Signal and Move.
Boat safety - wear a life jacket, have a way of communicating (beacons, flares, ). If you fall out of the boat, what will help you float?
First Aid - we practiced sending for help by dialling 111. We also learnt the DRS ABC when finding someone who is injured. Danger, Response, Send for help, Airway, Breathing and Circulation.
This was a fun way to learn about a serious subject - safety. Thanks to the Clued Up Kids team from the Mapua Senior Learning Team.
