Road Safety with Constable Hamish
On Wednesday 30th August Constable Hamish came into Ngaio class.
The first thing he showed us was his equipment that are used for fighting crime firstly, pepper spray, handcuffs, taser, notebook, flashlight, 2 police phones, walkie talkies, big bandage and pistol holder.
We did a drill about how easy it is to hear which way traffic is coming. But the traffic was his whistle. We had to close our eyes and see if we can point what direction the sound was coming from.
He also gave us a sneak peek of the new road lay-out of Mapua from a video.
Then we went on a little walk to the road to teach us how to cross safely. First you look to your right and think "danger right" because the first lot of traffic will be coming from this side because you drive on the right side of the road. Then left, then danger right before we cross the road safely (with out getting hit by a car like 1,000 people every year).
Our teacher Anna got to sit in the police car. She also got to start it, put it in reverse and back it up. She could not hear Constable Hamish because the radio was on too loud. We were trying to see if we could tell what lights meant what so if a car was in a driveway we could cross safely.
To finish off, Hamish got in the car and put on the lights and sirens, yay!
