Ngaio Student Volunteer Army Project
As part of our Inquiry this term Ngaio has investigated the Student Volunteer Army (SVA), creating our own project based off this model.
We looked into the SVA, how they started, what they did for their community and why they did it. From here we brainstormed all the people in our community we could help and contacted them, asking for ideas as to what we could do to help.
We received many ideas but the ones appealing to us the most were helping out at Hardy Kids, the local Volunteer Fire Service and Age Concern. Students were divided up into roles and planned a day of volunteering our time to give back to the community.
Last Thursday we had a huge day creating cards for the Red Cross and Age Concern to distribute to elderly people around our region who might be alone on Christmas. We created nearly 60 fabulous cards, which we then gave over to the very thankful ladies from Red Cross and Age Concern on Friday morning. They were blown away with the time and care the students had put into their cards and also with their communication throughout the project.
Later this week we are heading down to the local fire station to help deliver fire safety pamphlets to the community and with lots of little jobs around the station.
A big thank you to all those in our community who came up with ideas and responded to the students emails. Also to School Kit for providing an amazing resource for us and the $50 New World voucher so we can share some kai and stories at the end of it all.
