Toetoe and the Egg

Fiona Bibby-Smith —

Toetoe tamariki did a science experiment. What would happen if we put an egg in vinegar?

Straight after we put the egg in, we noticed little bubbles on the outside of the shell. Nothing else happened. We decided to leave it overnight.

The next day we checked the egg. There was froth on the top of the vinegar. It made it look like beer. When we carefully lifted the egg out of the vinegar something funny had happened. The hard shell had become soft. When we rubbed it, the brown came off and it was white. The bit of shell that had been out of the vinegar was still hard. We wondered if anything else would happen if we left it one more day.

On the third day it had changed again! It had sunk to the bottom and was fatter. When we rubbed it gently this time the white disappeared and the egg became see-through.

We could see the yolk floating in the middle. The egg was very rubbery. We decided to try and bounce it. It bounced from down low. It bounced from a medium height. It went splat when it was bounced from up high!
