PB4L - Positive Learning 4 Behaviour
PB4L approaches provide a positive school climate and create a supportive environment for personal, social, and academic growth for students and staff.
This year we are excited to be introducing the PB4L Framework to Māpua School. PB4L stands for ‘Positive Behaviour 4 Learning’. This is an initiative being introduced to schools via the Ministry of Education and is aimed at improving behaviour and learning. It is a research-based initiative that is designed to enhance our school climate/environment by explicitly teaching and acknowledging positive behaviours. It is a highly regarded programme that is already used by over 800 schools throughout New Zealand.
PB4L is all about teaching children the right behaviour, just like we teach any other subjects at school.
“If a student does not know how to read, we teach
If a student does not know how to swim, we teach
If a student does not know how to multiply, we teach
If a student does not know how to behave, we teach."
PB4L School-Wide looks at behaviour and learning from a whole-of-school as well as an individual child perspective. The framework is based on international evidence.
The Positive Behaviour for Learning School-Wide framework, otherwise known as PB4L School-Wide, is helping New Zealand schools build a culture where positive behaviour and learning is a way of life. The framework is tailored to a school’s own environment and cultural needs.
It’s not about changing the students; it’s about changing the environment, systems and practices that are in place to support them to make positive behaviour choices. PB4L School-Wide looks at behaviour and learning from a whole-of-school as well as an individual child perspective. The implementation of the framework will be led by Sharon and Zac as the school’s PB4L ‘leads’. They will be supported by a PB4L School-Wide Team of Anna and Bridget.
The first step in our PB4L journey is to decide on a set of school wide values that we, as a school community, feel are important. To generate these values we will be seeking staff, student and whanau voice. Over the next few weeks we will be gathering whanau voice, we can’t wait to hear what you think.
Our aim is to embed these values into the different contexts and settings within school and our community.
