Dangerous Decibels.. are you damaging your ears?

Pip Day —

New research is proving that 1 in 5 of our young people are showing signs of hearing loss.

Tracy from the Nelson Hearing Association came and spoke to the three intermediate classes to provide information around the irreversible damage they could be doing to their ears.  With more and more young people using headphones and earbuds the chance of damaging their ears is increasing.  Tracy stated that the safe (and this is at the top end) decibel rating is 85dB.  She recommends limiting headphone use to 90 minutes per day at half volume.  Tracy explained that once the hairs in the cochlea are damaged they do not grow back and can't be replaced.  She emphasised the need for our young people to display self-regulation in regards to their own personal health, and just like decisions around drugs and alcohol, decisions around keeping their ears safe are just as important.  Tracy also mentioned how we can be supportive of those in our communities that have already suffered hearing loss.

This was a very interesting and informative presentation and hopefully, our students will heed the advice given and think about the level at which they play music etc, as well as considering wearing earplugs/muffs in those situations where ears could be damaged.
