The Grass is Greener

Neil Chalmers —

Jamie Broderick was a young man on a mission, and the current lush green grass growing on our top field is something he can be duly proud of.

Jamie, seen here trying out the cab of this impressive tractor, came to me a year ago suggesting that he, and others, were keen to see the playing field grass resowed. He had talked with his family and worked out the process and possible costs. He even went as far as raising some funds to get the work done.

I was impressed with the clarity of his vision and the determination to see the job done and done well. Coming from a home where landscaping (Mapua Landscaping) is a part of their life, I could see that Jamie had it all sorted. The only issue was having funds to manage to pay for the work.

That's where another school family came into the picture, and I wish to thank them (name to be disclosed at a another time) for their financial support. Board member Amber Bonny brokered the deal, and Darren Broderick finalised the programme of work.

The bulk of the work was completed during the last holidays, and now, some five weeks later, the grass is growing beautifully. Regular rain has encouraged its growth, and we look forward to the field's use this summer.

We're always impressed when students take on a project, even more so when the outcome is beneficial for us all and is manageable.

Thank you, Jamie.
