Former Refugees and Kōwhai Class Create Beautiful Mats Together

Helen DouglasJuly 2, 2024

Former refugees from Nelson spent the morning with Kōwhai class and worked together to weave a mat.

Recently Kōwhai welcomed former refugees from Myanmar and Pakistan into their class. Students were partnered with an adult and together they worked to weave a beautiful mat together. This was a perfect activity for both groups as it was a hands on activity that the children required support with and didn't require a lot of language to be used by the adults. This mat was then used as part of the children's Matariki display.

This was a really positive experience for the students and adults. Kōwhai class then showed their buddy around the school. The students gave their buddy a bookmark that they had coloured featuring traditional Maori artwork. A really wonderful experience for us! Thanks to Sally Carlton for arranging this special opportunity.
