Year 12 Biology Camp at Lake Rotoiti

MBC —

Year 12 Biology Camp was held at Lake Rotoiti

Miss Homewood’s Biology class have been preparing for two assessments through term one and they certainly put all that learning to use in the week away! Luckily the weather at Rotoiti was sunny after the morning frost every day which was great for our walk up to Parachute Rock. This involved sampling the plants to find out how they changed as we increased in altitude. The boys disappeared into the bush at each stop armed with tape measures and dataloggers and became tree species experts overnight. Thanks to Mr Dunn for keeping the pace up the hill on that day.

A chilly evening and cold morning were spent in the stream sampling invertebrates, so it was a good job we had Kristen Dempster, parent help on camp, to keep us fed and warm when we got back! We all learned something new about the invertebrates found to write about. The boys also developed an appreciation of the distribution of organisms in this environment.

A large part of the camp is carrying out practical Biology tasks, but the write ups took up the rest of the time in the evenings. Dr Attridge supported us in meeting the Biology expectations at level 2 and we were really impressed by the boys focus and determination to complete the internals to the best of their ability. They worked really hard the whole time, even late into each evening – well done boys.
