From Classroom to Kitchen
Our Winning Toastie Experience with Toastie Lords
What started as a fun classroom challenge turned into a real-world food adventure! As part of our Food Truck Technology course, we were tasked with designing an original toastie using local ingredients. Following the full design process, we brainstormed and trialed three different toastie ideas, gathered stakeholder feedback, and refined our final concept. After lots of taste-testing, we proudly landed on our winning creation: Oink, Sizzle…Boom – a pulled pork toastie featuring locally sourced ingredients like Boomtown sauce.
Taylor from Toastie Lords visited our class and shared her journey, from how Toastie Lords began to what it takes to stand out in the food industry. She gave us awesome tips about flavour balance, marketing strategies, and the magic four cheeses that make a toastie next-level delicious. We took her advice on board and made sure our toastie hit all the right notes.
As the winners of our in-class competition, we got the incredible opportunity to visit Toastie Lords and recreate our toastie with Taylor in their real kitchen. “It was really exciting to go in and see what they do behind the scenes to make the toasties,” said Emma. “I didn’t realise how much thought actually goes into something as simple as a toastie.”
We were shown around the workplace, got to use their hot grills, and even saw our toasties served up in official Toastie Lords packaging – which was honestly so cool. It felt like a full-circle moment: from sketching out ideas on paper to actually cooking in a professional kitchen.
This experience taught us so much about food design, teamwork, and the hard work that goes into creating a successful product. We feel incredibly lucky and inspired – and now we’ll never look at a toastie the same way again!
