Samoan Language Week

Lusia Anderson, Jeasinah Alipia and Catherine Lenati —

Talofa Lava! From the 29th of May to the 2nd of June MGC celebrated Samoan Language Week. Hear more from our students below.

Check out more photos here

Samoan language week is a week to celebrate the culture and language of Samoa.

Thursday was Samoa Independence Day, and to recognise it, teachers, families, and students got the opportunity to attend a flag-raising ceremony at MBC in the early hours of the morning. It was great to see how many people turned up to celebrate this special day. After the flag-raising ceremony, there was lots of food to share and time to talk before heading to school. It was such an incredible experience to be a part of.

During lunchtime, the Pasifika class as well as the Measina o Tahi Marawa Whanau class had the opportunity to perform. This was a chance for everyone to embrace the celebrations and for other schools to come and share their passion. It was the perfect ending to a very successful week.

My experience from last Thursday was excellent especially the flag-raising that happened at MBC it was nice to have them host for the first time and just lovely to do something different this year.

Talofa lava, mālō le soifua ma le lagi e māmā. Ia manuia tele the vaiaso o le Gagana Samoa. Happy Samoan Language week!Although our language week has finished, we are still on an excited buzz on how we finished celebrating our language at MGC. Thursday was definitely the highlight for me.

For the first time this year, the MGC Pasifika Komiti gave the honour to Marlborough Boys' College Pasifika Komiti to run the flag day ceremony. We had this on this on June the 1st which was the 61st year of Independence for Samoa, it was important for us to celebrate this on this day. Can't forget the scrumptious breakfast put on by students from both komiti. I love the Samoan panikeke/donut.

During lunchtime we got to perform our Samoan dance items to a lot of students. We invited the Pasifika dance groups and leaders from Bohally, Springlands School, St Mary's school and all 100+ students from Blenheim school! It was awesome for us to showcase what we have been learning in our Pasifika Dance class and from the Measina o Tahi Marawa whānau class. I'd also like to add that this was our school values definitely in action on that Thursday. I can't wait to see what we have in store for next year's Samoan Language week. Tofā soifua.

Last week here at MGC we celebrated Samoan Language week. The whole week was full of activities like different Samoan games everyone got to learn. Thursday being Samoan independence was a big day for us where we had the flag raising with MBC. The Pasifika dance class were able to perform four dances for all the primary schools invited. It was such a great experience for me and I know everyone else.

Talofa lava all!

Last week we had the privilege of celebrating Samoa's culture and history through Samoan language week. During the week activities were held by our Pasifika Committee. These were commonly known or played games in Samoa. Through this students were able to learn how kids back in Samoa would spend a lot of their free time at school.

On Thursday at lunchtime performances were held by the Measina O Tahi Marawa Whanau Class and the Siva Mai Sau Ia Dance Class. Many primary schools like Bohally, St Mary's and Blenheim school were invited to come along and watch. Parents were welcome as well.

We received lots of positive feedback from school staff, parents and students saying that it was an enjoyable experience for them and a memorable way to celebrate Samoan culture. I personally also loved the entire week! I still have much to learn about my Samoan background but I'm glad that I am able to learn about it through events like these at school.
