Environmental Sustainability in the community

Melynda Bentley, Science —

This term our senior Environmental Sustainability classes have been listening to guest speakers, and out and about on field trips around Marlborough exploring sustainability.

We have explored snippets of Conservation, Farming, Marine, School and Viticulture. We have been to Yealands, Pyramid Farm, Teresa’s Place (our school gardener) and in the Queen Charlotte Sound as well as exploring parts of our school.

We have had a variety of guest speakers talking about sustainability, soil, oceans, mapping of oceans, biosecurity and bats. Dr Tim Haggitt and Nakita came from Auckland University to teach us about the effects of underwater noise on marine species and build hydrophones.

We also had a special visit from Professor Simon Thrush (Auckland University) and Professor Conrad Pilditch (Waikato University).

Students are currently debating, selecting and making their choice on what sustainable issue they will address in term 2.

The best place to learn has been out in the community as you can see from our photos below:

  • In the woolshed - Chloe thanks Richard and Chris Dawkins with our traditional plant gifting from our Horticultural Block.
  • Making hydrohones - Nakita with Mckenzie and Lola Hydophone workshop in the new Science lab (see above).
  • Marine trip - Tayla and Brooke driving the boat. Our team ready to go!
  • Learning in the woolshed.
  • All field trips resulted in students attracting various animals. At Yealands there were kune kune, at Pyramid a farm dog, at Teresa’s there were alpacas and in the Queen Charlotte Sounds wekas and other birds.
