Marlborough Girls' College —

End of year message from the Board of Trustees

Tēnā koutou katoa! Hello and Season’s Greetings to you all from the MGC Board of Trustees.

Can you believe we’ve nearly reached the end of 2023? It’s been another jam-packed year with ongoing improvements, fabulous events (there was even a school trip to America in there!) and inspiring achievements from all corners of the college.

At this point I should probably reiterate the aspirational and all-encompassing focus and goals of our Board and College – if you want to read that, feel free to check out our website and policies on SchoolDocs. Ultimately why we as board members give our time is we believe in and support our innovative and hardworking Senior Leadership Team, Staff and Management to provide learning programmes that foster student achievement – for all students.

That’s on top of day to day running a school for just under 1000 students and helping plan a new college - amongst other things.

We have implemented some pretty big changes over recent years, and obviously this year. Change is always challenging, but following robust discussions around the boardroom table we are confident that the matters we agree to will lead to an improvement for our college and kura. Huge strides will not necessarily be immediate – a wise person told me that curriculum change is always a long game - but it was pretty exciting at the recent Curriculum Meeting to see a positive shift already in student results from the changes implemented with the Junior Curriculum.

At this point I could mention trying times post Covid, stresses and disruption caused by rolling strikes, etc etc. But we all know what it was like. It’s been rough – for everyone. Hand on heart though I am super proud of our college and excited about the positive steps we are making already and will continue to make with your support.

So Team MGC – it’s time to rest up after yet another pretty full on year. Please take the time to reflect on how far we’ve come and rest assured that 2024 is in good hands. As always, if you have questions or want to discuss something about MGC – positive or that may be concerning to you – contact our Senior Leadership Team who are happy to sit down and chat.

Wishing you all a safe and happy break over the summer holidays.

See you in 2024!

Anna Straker

Kia ora and talofa lava, my name is Jeasinah Alipia and I am your Student Representative for 2024. I put myself forward for this opportunity because I saw this as a way to give back to our school community. Not only that, but to also achieve my goal towards representing and serving our student body. I'm thankful for the support I've been given and I hope to uplift our school values in everything we do.

Fa'afetai lava.

2024 Student Māori Youth Voice

Tēnā koutou, my name is Giulietta Doig and I am the 2024 Student Māori Youth Voice for MGC. I applied for this position because I want to get myself more involved in our school and my Māori culture, hopefully making a difference to all. I would like to follow in the footsteps of my Tupuna. My Waka ‘Rangimatoru’ and Hape ancestry have lead my family over many generations, with great strength and mana. So I hope this is the start of me living up to their name and honouring my culture and customs. Thank you to everyone who has supported me at the start of this journey.

2023 Mid-Term Parent Representative Election

Results from the 2023 mid-term Parent Representative Election have been released.

Congratulations to Anna Straker and Ash Millen for being re-elected to the Board and thank you to Alice Boyce for putting your name forward for nomination.
