Shakespeare still talks

Joanne DesForges —

Lauren Doherty attended the NSSP (National Schools Shakespeare Production) in Wellington during October. Something she found to be literally 'life-changing'!

I have learnt such valuable skills not only in the realm of theatre and the arts, but life skills which have enabled me to gain confidence and remain calm under pressure. Going in as the composer for NSSP, I was worried that I wouldn’t be able to bond and connect with the other students, but I quickly learnt that each and every person was the most kind, welcoming and accepting human being, which helped me to feel right at home.

I was in awe of all the students, especially regarding their memory capacity and improvisation skills, and I really enjoyed being able to help people learn their cues.

I loved being able to help craft soundscapes which would elevate the on-stage action within the plays, and being able to bounce ideas off of other people and use techniques and styles such as choral chanting and the human voice in order to give emphasis to important moments.

Taking part in workshops was another thing I found really eye-opening, as it was wonderful being exposed to such a wealth of knowledge and it was really useful in deepening my understanding of Shakespeare’s work. Additionally, working with Tom McCrory was so beneficial, especially learning about iambic pentameter, as it meant I could apply what I had learnt about the internal rhythm of Shakespeare’s play into the musical phrasing of Measure for Measure.

Being given such an accepting and creative space in which to throw ideas around in, was something I was very grateful for during this week, as being able to move around each group and witness the different styles and techniques each director used in order to bring out the best in every actor was something I really valued; it allowed me to discover how I work within groups, and it challenged me to work time efficiently.

I’m really appreciative of having this chance to create and perform with such talented and hard-working people.I feel truly blessed and honoured to have been involved with this week, and I’m certain that the skills I have gained will help me later in life. Without opportunities like this in NZ, there wouldn’t be anything to help support the transition for young people coming out of school and into the performing arts industry, which is why NSSP is so integral because it provides a platform and space in which we can experience what it’s like working amongst directors to perform works in a short amount of time, alongside helping us prove to ourselves that we are capable of achieving our dreams.

Additionally, through the opportunities from NSSP, I have been selected as part of the Young Shakespeare Company to represent NZ at the Globe Theatre in London next July. A truly amazing opportunity!
