Action Learning: Exploring Physics Through Hands-On Activities

Marlborough Girls' College —

Physics 301 and Need for Speed in Year 10 have been actively engaging in hands-on learning experiences to deepen their understanding of scientific concepts.

In Miss Bentley’s Need for Speed class, students recently investigated pressure. They explored the varying types of pressure required in different scenarios, such as using a pin and balloon to understand pressure dynamics. A highlight of their experiments included testing the pressure tolerance of a bed of balloons, demonstrating how evenly distributed pressure can support a surprising amount of weight.

Meanwhile, Mrs. Burton's Physics 301 class took their studies outdoors to Pollard Park on 7 June. Here, they utilised playground equipment such as swings to investigate concepts of resonance and damping in simple harmonic motion. Additionally, they explored rotational inertia and angular momentum using the roundabout, turning abstract principles into tangible learning experiences.

In the field of science, visualising and applying concepts through hands-on activities significantly enhances learning and comprehension. These experiences not only make learning enjoyable but also foster a deeper connection to the subject matter, paving the way for a better understanding of physics principles.
