House Reading Challenge

McKenzie Snowden, Head Librarian —

Throughout April and May, the library has been a busy place of discussion, with many students logging books to gain points for the annual House Reading Challenge.

Once again, Ōpaoa takes a significant win with 467 points! Placings are as below:

  1. Ōpaoa with 467 points
  2. Wairau with 318 points
  3. Awatere with 247 points
  4. Kaituna with 223 points

However, we want to congratulate everyone who participated in this challenge! There were 1255 points logged in total, which is very commendable considering no picture books could be logged this year.

By picking up a book, you are not just helping your houses, but are also contributing to your own mental health and wellbeing - reading is a habit we encourage you to continue outside of the House Reading Challenge. Even just 6 minutes per day can reduce stress levels by up to 68%, which is particularly important at this time of year. We are especially impressed with the number of students who logged their points in person this year.

Mrs Shipley mentions that: “It was wonderful having so many of the students coming to talk to us in person about the books they had read this year. Talking about the books you have enjoyed validates the reading experience, and encourages more reading. It also helps keep us up to date with the most popular books.”

Happy reading!

Mckenzie Snowden, Head Librarian
