Principal's Update - 19 June 2023

Marlborough Girls' College —

Ma te kahukura ka rere te manu - Adorn the birds with feathers so that it may fly

We have had multiple weeks of celebrations at school recently, and I trust you enjoy reading about the mahi, learning and leadership of our students in this edition of our Bulletin.

In particular, I want to acknowledge the outstanding achievements of Fenella Cooney and Māreikura Nepia, both Year 10s, who won their sections in the regional Ngā Manu Kōrero competition. It is very rare for one school to win in two categories and we are incredibly proud of you both! Do read the article that outlines their success.

I was asked recently why we have so many events and weeks to celebrate different aspects of life and cultures here at MGC. That's an easy answer - because we are diverse, and we love to share our uniqueness, learn about each other and develop empathy and understanding. This is a sure way to create belonging, a sense of safety and wellbeing amongst our school community. Put simply - Whanaungatanga.

Thank you to all our Manutaki and leaders who create opportunities for others. And thank you to everyone who joins in the fun and supports those who lead. We celebrated our senior Year 12 and 13 students at our fabulous Formal on Saturday evening, with everyone enjoying the style, glamour, music and overwhelming positive and happy vibe. A huge ngā mihi nui to everyone involved in making a great event, including the team at the conference centre, the NZ Police, and parents.

In line with Matariki's themes of remembrance, celebrating the present and looking to the future, I am taking some extended leave over the next few weeks, and will be catching up with family overseas in readiness for Term 3 and the rest of the year. Our superb senior leadership team have the final two weeks of the term in hand, and Dr Michelle Tewkesbury will be Acting Principal in my absence. As Matariki rises, and we move forward together, I wish everyone a calm and joyful end of term and a school holiday full of reflection and rejuvenation for the year ahead.

Ngā mihi nui
