Year 9 Body as Art Exhibition Showcases Creativity and Learning

Claire van der Watt —

This week, our Year 9 students in the Body as Art course presented their final projects at an end-of-year exhibition.

The course, a unique collaboration between Science and Art, explores the intersection of biology and creativity through a range of hands-on activities and projects.

Throughout the year students studied topics such as fungi, microorganisms, the human eye, perception and colour theory. They learned to observe and interpret the natural world through both scientific and artistic lenses, creating abstract paintings inspired by microscopic observations, sculptural works based on fungi, and observational paintings of eyes with creative colour schemes. Each unit culminated in practical tasks that challenged students to combine their understanding of scientific and artistic concepts with creative expression.

For the exhibition, students presented their learning on A1 display boards, featuring annotated photographs, drawings, and paintings from the course. The highlight was the final project: in groups of two or three, students created unique 3D artworks inspired by their favourite topics from the course. These pieces reflected their creativity and the connections they made between science and art.

The exhibition was a celebration of interdisciplinary learning, showcasing not only the students’ artistic and scientific achievements but also their ability to reflect on their learning journey. It was an inspiring event that highlighted the power of collaboration between subjects and the creativity of our students.

Thank you to everyone who supported this wonderful event.
