Journey to Maadi

MGC Rowing Team —

Here our MGC Rowing Team share their journey from entry to the Maadi Cup all the way to the podium.

25 March 2022 - We're on the road! A big thank you to Blenheim Toyota for helping with transport. They say it takes a village and we really appreciate all the help provided by whānau and community. 

Maadi Cup 2022

27 March 2022 - Months of training, early mornings, blisters, face masks and the odd tear are all a distant memory. First race starts at 8.28am. 

28 March 2022 - The day started out very foggy and the sun didn't come out till after lunch but racing went ahead and we had some great performances. Every boat did their best including some personal bests!

29 March 2022 - Day 2 started with a beautiful morning for rowing Some outstanding results today with some boats through to A finals and some heading to race in a semi.

30 March 2022 - Perfect weather again today and more great results.

31 March 2022 - Semi finals day with nerves running high. MGC totally punched above their weight today. All boats progressed to either A finals or a B final. Way to go!

1 April 2022 - Finals Friday. The MGC team are in a phenomenal 9 A finals and a B final. A magic result for the crews, dedicated coaches and supporting families and friends. #1 were thrilled with their bronze and the #2 crew (the u16 4+) were equally thrilled in their 5th place.

2 April 2022 - Final day at Maadi.  Outstanding results with podium finishes. A brilliant campaign with great results for so many crews - whether it was a medal or a PB! A huge thank you to the coaches - Sean O’Neill, Mike McManaway, Stella Blake, Andrew Blake and the many parents who supported the team. Also a huge shout out to the many businesses who support MGC Rowing.

  • Bronze Medal - Girls U17 Coxed Four
    • Lexi Timpson, Daisy Vavasour, Emma Flanagan, Molly Glover and Elizabeth Bowron

Several of our crews finished in the top 10 for their races.

Overall MGC placed:

  • 11th equal (out of 40 schools) in the Star trophy (overall Champion rowing school); and 
  • 6th in the Executive Trophy for champion sweep oar rowing school.
