Samoan Language Week 2024

Samoan Language Week

Marlborough Girls' College - May 29, 2024

We celebrated Samoan Language week from 26th May to 1st June.

Our Pasifika student komiti ran a number of activities which saw Samoan language and culture shared around our kura.

It was awesome to see so many students out in the quad during the ‘Poly want a lolly’ language session where students came with a Samoan word or phrase to receive a lolly or chocolate.

As with every Samoan Language week we cannot forget the celebration of culture through dance in which our Measina o Tahi whānau class and the Siva Mai Sau Ia Pasifika dance class, performed to not only our school but to some of our feeder schools too. It is always heartwarming to see Blenheim school, Redwoodtown school and Bohally attend our lunchtime concert.

We ended off the week with our Samoan Flag raising ceremony and a special workshop on the ‘Ava ceremony for welcoming visitors. This was the first time we did this in our kura where it was combined with students from Marlborough Boys’ College.

We’d like to acknowledge Mr Kaisa Fa’alilo from the Blenheim Samoan community for running this important workshop for our students.
