Careers + Learning = Fabulous Futures

Deb Martis, Careers & Pathways Leader —

A small group of students set off to explore the world of Aquaculture.

Tuesday 5th April was a grey day, but that didn’t stop our intrepid group of adventurers from venturing into the Marlborough Sounds on MV Grey Heron, for our Aquaculture Field Trip.

We visited a mussel farm where we learnt about the many processes involved in getting mussels to our tables, and we learnt about some of the career opportunities in this field.

Following on from this we visited the Kopaua King Salmon Farm, and experienced a salmon farm in action. We saw many seals lazily floating around the perimeter of the farm, waiting for the chance to snack on a nice juicy salmon. We then visited the King Shag colony before heading home.

Tamara really enjoyed the trip, and said she "loved learning about different aquaculture careers and being able to experience hands on, what these careers are really like."
