Body As Art

Marlborough Girls' College —

In an innovative fusion of art and science, our Year 9 students recently completed a Body as Art course, showcasing their creativity and scientific understanding in a unique exhibition.

The course began with a focus on lab safety, expressed through informative infographics. As the students delved into biology, they explored the sensory world - eyes, ears, brain, and neurons - through artistic lenses. They examined biological specimens under microscopes, leading to an exploration of abstraction in art. This culminated in a striking class installation of petri dish watercolor paintings, inspired by the abstract beauty of bacteria.

The students also studied fungi, skillfully transforming two-dimensional images into three-dimensional art pieces, emphasizing context and aesthetics. Their journey included mastering tonal drawing to convey meaning in eye illustrations. The course concluded with students, working individually or in pairs, creating three-dimensional, sculptural, and conceptual art projects. These, along with their preparatory work, were proudly displayed in an exhibition, celebrating the fusion of art and biology, and attended by family and peers.
