Youth Parliament
Do you like the idea of having a voice at a national level? How about applying to be a Youth MP in 2022! Applications now open.
Stuart Smith, local MP for Kaikoura District, is looking for a Youth MP for 2022. This is a fantastic opportunity to be part of a national programme which brings together rangatahi from across the motu to participate in a meaningful way in decision making at parliamentary level.
Just like New Zealand Parliament, they are looking for people of diverse backgrounds, abilities, and identities to represent our region.
If you like the idea of working alongside other like minded people at parliamentary level, this could be the way to get involved. Who knows where you could end out in the future ... it could be the start of a new career!
How do I enter?
You just need to send a 30-90 second video to stuart.smithmp@parliament.govt.nz, explaining why you would be a great Youth MP for Kaikoura.

Applications for Youth Parliament in 2022 close on 12 November 2021.
When is it?
The two-day Youth Parliament event is currently scheduled to be held on Tuesday 19 July and Wednesday 20 July 2022 at Parliament, during parliamentary recess. Tenure will run from 1 March to 31 August (dates to be confirmed in December).
Youth MP eligibility criteria
You can apply to be a Youth MP for New Zealand Youth Parliament 2022 if you meet the following criteria:
- are aged 16 – 18 years old (inclusive) at 12 November 2021
- are active in your community or region, or looking for ways to become active in your community or region
- can attend Youth Parliament on 19 and 20 July 2022 and commit to the Youth MP tenure, from 1 March to 31 August 2022
- are interested in youth issues, politics and / or social change
- can seek the views, opinions and ideas of their peers and represent them at the two-day Youth Parliament 2022 event
- will work within the protocols and behavioural expectations of Youth Parliament 2022.
Like New Zealand Parliament, Youth Parliament will benefit from a range of voices, so we encourage young people with diverse backgrounds, abilities, and identities to step forward.
