Manutaki lead by demonstrating positive behaviours and acting as role models for all year levels. Manutaki promote Marlborough Girls’ College in a positive way and at all times uphold our school values of Whanaungatanga, Manaakitanga and Kotahitanga.

ROLE DESCRIPTION

These leadership roles require students to show leadership, maturity, resilience and common sense. Manutaki must be able to stand up for what they believe is right and encourage other students to do the same. Being kind and supportive of others is a key attribute of a successful Manutaki.

THE NAME

Ko te Manutaki ka noho mataara i te wā e kai ana te kāhui. Ka noho te manutaki ki te tiaki i te rākau e kainga ana; ki te tata mai he Manu kē ki te kai, ka panaia e ia (Te Ara 2011).

The sentry bird stands guard while the flock is eating. The sentry bird would guard the tree where they were eating, and if other birds approached to eat, it drove them away.

A Manutaki is a sentry bird, a bird that keeps guard over the flock while they are eating. In this context our Prefects are the Manutaki, the kai or food in this metaphor is the knowledge that we gain at school. As the proverbial saying goes ‘Ko te kai a te rangatira kai, he kōrero’ – speaking and therefore knowledge is the food of chiefs. We (the student body) are the kāhui (a flock) in which the Manutaki looks over to ensure that their flock is well looked after and can thrive and fly - 'Ka Rere'
