Careers Update - May 2022

Deb Martis, Careers & Pathways Leader —

It's been a busy month with lots going on in our Careers Department throughout May.

  • A total of 38 students have successfully completed a Defensive Driving course under the guidance of Paul Dalley of AA Defensive Driving. We are very grateful to Marlborough Lines for sponsoring this event.
  • Two classes have participated in a Workplace First Aid course, so we now have 33 students who are certified to help out in situations requiring first aid.
  • As part of our Gateway programme, students are required to participate in work placement programmes. The Red Shirts programme, Blue Shirts programme, Countdown Seeds, and Farmers programme are offered in conjunction with Service IQ, The Warehouse, Warehouse Stationery, Farmers, and Countdown. Several students have successfully completed these courses, gaining 23 credits at Level 2 NCEA, and we still have five students participating in work placements.
  • Our Trades courses with Top of The South Trades Academy continue to offer training in various trades, and students report that these courses inspire them to think deeply about their career pathway.
  • Whenua Iti Outdoors, Adventure Tourism, Uniform Services, and Manaaki Tāpoi Culture Tourism courses are under way with participating students enjoying experiences in the great outdoors that can lead to wonderful careers.

Our Careers Expo is well under way, and scheduled to be held on Wednesday June 22nd. Mark this date in your calendar. We look forward to seeing you there. Any parents or caregivers who would like to present to our students at the Expo are welcome to make contact with Deb Martis or Megan Luff in the Careers Department.

We continue to work with our students to help them with their future study and career questions and planning.
