Day out in the Hills

Emily Flynn Y13 —

Emily Flynn, Manutaki Hākinakina | Sport, shares her perspective on the 2023 Cross Country day.

On Friday 28th April we had our annual Marlborough Girls’ College School Cross Country. It was a great day for it, the sun was shining, and luckily there was a breeze to keep the competitors cool.

By midday, the Wither Hills Farm Park was sprinkled with yellow, red, blue, and green, and the presence of house spirit was impossible to miss. The afternoon was jampacked with races!

As usual, each age group (U19, U16, U15, U14) had a 3km ‘competitive’ running race, there was also an option for participants to walk to the Witch’s Hat too. Although the run was competitive and proved a challenge for some, the company and encouragement from others made it considerably easier.

The walk was more of a relaxed and social affair. The music, house chants, and laughter could be heard from the car park. At the top, teachers took in the views, while students took this opportunity to snap a quick pic for their socials, and the year 13’s took their renowned annual group photo.

Throughout the day participation points were awarded to every individual who completed a race, and additional points were awarded to those who placed in the top six of the running races. Ultimately, participation proved to be key!

At the end of the day, all participants, staff members, and amazing supporters gathered together for Mrs Lloyd to announce the highly anticipated final results of the day. Words from the House Manutaki reiterate what an amazing day it was:

  • “The participation was just so incredible to see”
  • “I loved seeing everyone join in and despite the initial hesitance, everyone did so well and pushed themselves. They should all be super proud of themselves because I most definitely am!”
