Reusing Household Items To Make Phone Speakers

Ella Brown —

Year 9 MakHER Space Technology students learnt how to make phone speakers out of household items.

In Week 2 the MakHER Space Tech crew made speakers out of a paper towel roll and a plastic cup. The utensils we used to cut and shape the cups and roll were craft knives and scissors. Some of us used tape to secure the cups to the cardboard roll together. Majority of the class didn't think it was going to work. We thought the teacher had gone crazy. Some of us even said, "Mrs Malik, you're crazy".

We all collaborated hard getting it done. In the end we opened our phones, put on Spotify and turned up the music, putting our phones in the little slot that we had cut to fit our phones.

After the music played louder and with a bit of a bass we pulled out our phones to compare sound differences. When our phones were out of the speaker they were a little quiet and not a lot of bass. When the phones were in the speaker they were louder, had a little bit of a bass and gave off the vibes that were back in the 80's, listening to records on a record player or listening to a tape.

We were all very shocked that something so quick and easy made out of household objects could make such a difference, in the projection of music and sound. Check out these awesome photos of the progress and the finish.
